Your Thirty-seventh Assignment: Making Demands

I want it all, Cypher.

All of what, Kaliyo?

Everything.  Now.  I demand it.

I'm afraid you're in for a disappointment then.

Lock and load, agents.  Short post today.  This morning we're going to have a little talk about the value of patience.

Your Thirty-sixth Assignment: Against the Grain

You're not like other Imperials, Cypher.

No, Kaliyo, I'm not.

Why?  Why do you care?  Why go out of your way?

Kaliyo, I believe in the Empire.  I stand for its people.  We will save them when the Sith burn it all to the ground.

Lock and load, agents!  Today, I was perusing lonomonkey's blog, Screaming Monkeys.  He has an interesting post today on being a dark Republic player.  It got me thinking; I tend to play against type.  Why?  Do I have 'special snowflake' disease or is it something more?

Bounty Board: Vanguard of Norrath

Over the weekend, my guild got embarrassed.  During an organized PVP event, we were outnumbered 2:1 and obliterated.  It was not a good feeling.  To whit, I am now posting an open bounty on all Vanguarders on the Shien server (this is applicable only to Scum and Villainy members).  Here's the post I put in Facebook.  Open season, ladies and gentlemen!

If this doesn't fire ya'll up, I dunno what will. This is a snippet of convo from the VoN guys during the world PVP event, from Herby's perspective (a VoN-er from WoW):

I was listening to you guys in chat that night...it went something like this...
????- "hey a sith"
Costa-"that's Kennys guild"
... ????-"I got one up here on the rocks...I just destroyed them"
Jay-"take it easy guys"
????-"hey, another one...die scum"
Herby-"don't kill too many of them"
Costa-"yah, we have alts in that guild"
????-"another one down!"

It was then described as a slaughter.

My people don't go down like that. From now on, it's on like Donkey Kong. Open bounty on all Vanguard of Norrath players! 5000 credits per killshot! Post your pics here and you'll receive the bounty from Targeter.

RULES:
1) Only 1 kill allowed. Don't farm them. This is supposed to be fun, not camping.
2) Each kill will be confirmed by me with Opak (GM of VoN) for fairness/non-camping
3) Be respectful! This is supposed to be fun! No rudeness will be tolerated. 'Course, what a Sith thinks is rude may be different than what a Jedi thinks is rude ...
4) If multiple Scummers are present, the bounty will be split among all parties.
5) Kills made while in guild events will not be payable.

Go get 'em, boys and girls. Spread the word.

Snap Shot: Yeah, Talkin 'Bout Stuff

Only a quick post today.  I've written and rewritten this post many times over the past two days.  First, it started life as a list of reasons why someone should sub to TOR.  Then it became a scorecard of TOR's flaws and strengths, with an objective score after it (it was a B+, by the by).

Today I looked at them and deleted them both.  They were pompous and arrogant.

Here's the deal.  If you sub to TOR, bully for you.  Nothing I say or do will convince you one way or the other.  This MMO, more than any before it, is a game that has to suit your specific need.  It's a niche within a niche.  It doesn't have the best raiding, nor the best pvp.  It doesn't have the best graphics (compared to other PC titles; darn good for an MMO though).  It lets you make the choices in the story and then feeds them into an galactic conflict.  Does it offer unlimited choice?  No.  Does it offer more choices than any MMO before it?  Yes.  Is that enough for Joe Q. Gamer?  I don't know.  You'll have to decide that for yourself.

So, there it is.  You either like it or you don't.  There'll be no fence-sitting on this game; you can't sorta like it or sorta hate it.  You either do or you don't.  Black and white.

But, hey, only a Sith deals in absolutes, right?

Fly safe, shoot straight!  For the glory of the Empire!

Your Thirty-fifth Assignment: Tanked

Agent, who is that?

Oh, that's my cousin.

Your cousin is a Zabrak Sith lord?

Well, he's not a blood relative.  Not really.

Lock and load, agents!  Recently ... well more like about two weeks ago ... I hit 50.  It was a strange moment; the story for my agent was essentially over.  What could I do next?  I tried to play my Sith Inquisitor ... blech.  Not a bad class, but just too many around right now.  Tried to restart my Bounty Hunter but was ambivalent.  I'd just gone 50 levels with a sniper rifle and the blaster pistol seemed oddly unfulfilling.  Enter the Sith Warrior, Verbrecher.

Boy howdy.

Where my agent was nuanced and clinical, the sith warrior is a blunt instrument of vengeance.  I feel like a completely unstoppable badass while playing him and let me tell ya ... it's one hell of a rush.  I'm leveling as a Juggernaut and loving every minute of it.  Couple that with the fact that my friend is also leveling a Sith Marauder at the same time and we make for a hellacious combo.  With me tanking, him DPSing, Quinn healing, and Vette providing support, there are few challenges for us in the game.  Heroics fall easily to our blades.  Bosses wither under our assault.  It's an epic feeling; I know it won't last forever.  I know Belsavis is coming.  I know Corellia will chew us up and spit us out, but hey, we're having fun right now.

This discovery of the Sith Warrior has made me look at my character list in a new light.  For the first time in an MMO, I'm trying tanking.  I'm trying it and I'm liking it.  In other games, I've been the pure DPS guy.  I've been the dude who knew his rotation back and forth, knew his consumables, knew when to apply pressure, when to ease off, when to bloodlust, and when to go completely nuts, knew the coefficients of attacks, knew too much really.  I could dial threat up and down according to the situation at hand; I was DPS and I loved it.  I took pride in being smart DPS that tanks and healer appreciated.  But in SWTOR ...

I'm finding that I enjoy tanking.  A lot.  I enjoy taking punishment and protecting my allies.  I like the mechanics of it, the variety of things I can do, and the feeling of absolute power I have as a tank.  In WoW and RIFT, tanks hit enemies with wet noodles and did no damage.  In SWTOR, my Sith Warrior charges in, smashes an opponent in the face, roars like a tiger, ravages his enemy with a sweeping strike, stuns another foe, applies sunder stacks, and cremates everything in front of him.  It's completely changed the way I view tanking; from the meat shield designed to soak damage and draw threat from abilities to the scariest motherfucker in the group.  My Sith Warrior is a madman, a deadly dervish, dispensing hurt at anyone nearby and wreaking utter havoc.

I loved the tanking mechanic so much that ... remember this is the DPS guy who wouldn't touch a tank in RIFT or WoW ... I rerolled my guys.  My Bounty Hunter became a Powertech.  My Inquisitor became an Assassin.  And yes, I'm going to level them all as tanks.  Such is the power of SWTOR; it's turned me from a DPS guy to tanking guy.  May not last forever, but dangit, for right now, I'm havin' a hoot.

Fly safe, shoot straight!  For the glory of the Empire!

Your Week in Rage: Asshole Hipsters

Lock and load, agents!  Today, I'm not going to talk about game mechanics, gear, or even my own impressions of the leveling experience.  I'm going to be talking about Joe Q. Gamer and how much of a fucking retard he can be.  This isn't going to be a normal post; it's going to be a profanity-laced rant directed at some TOR gamers who are being rather stupid.

Your Thirty-fourth Assignment: Moddable Gear

How much for the barrel only?

Ah, for you agent I make many fine deals!  For you, it is only seven!

Seven?  Seems steep for something I'll need to replace by the time I venture to Belsavis.  How about five?

How about you get out of my shop?

Lock and load, agents!  Today, Pappy Targeter's got a special treat for ya'll ... a how-to guide for commendations!  Well, not just commendations, but how you earn 'em, where to spend 'em, and most importantly HOW to spend 'em.  Read on after the break!

Your Thirty-third Assignment: Hawaii 5-0

How does it feel, Cipher?

Don't call me that anymore, Kaliyo.  But it feels good.  Freedom.  Where to now?

Anywhere you want, agent.  Anywhere you want.

Lock and load, agents!  6days, 12 hours, and 5 minutes into my agent's career and he's now level 50.  It was a weird thing; I thoroughly despised the last planet (Corellia) and couldn't wait to be done with it, yet oddly was hesitant about the moment when I would hit 50.  And when it came, it totally shocked me!  I wasn't paying attention to my bar and suddenly the red lights flash, the Imperial insignias show above my head, and my leveling career as an Imperial Agent is done.  It's a strange feeling; I feel as if I'm done, but I've got so much to do.  I finished up all of Corellia and moved my attention to my rather pathetic crew skills.  I've let them languish far too long.  And I'm also starting to think that Artifice was a bad choice - making money off Sith is fun and all, but I'd rather something I can use, eh?  I'm thinking of switching to Biochem and Bioanalysis and leveling it the hard way (going back to each planet and doing them all over).  Fun stuff, eh?

Your Thirty-second Assignment: The Good Doctor

Doctor Loken, come in.  Doctor, I need you.  I'm losing blood quickly ... rendezvous at my coordinates as soon as you can ...

Lock and load!  Today, we talk about companions of the agent ... which to use and which to leave on the ship.  Also, this is SPOILERIFIC, so if you don't want to know, don't read past the jump.
